- In this spiritual arrangement, Dr. Hicks transports the listener through the singers lamenting prayers to “die easy when I die”. Death should come easy, since life has been so hard. The stumbling arpeggios in the first phrase accompany the weariness of the singer, walking through such a difficult life. The singer continues and prays to “see my mother when I die”, with warm lush chords hugging the singer as they long for their mothers embrace again. The final prayer to “see Jesus when I die” is met with a fanfare procession, with the climax to “shout” when I see Jesus. The final plea of the prayer is answered, and the singer is given their just reward with the final change from minor to major under the words softly sung “when I die”.
